80% of what you need to know

Business writing is about clarity and persuasion. The main technique is keeping things simple.

  • Get rid of extra words.
  • Your first sentence needs to grab the reader.
  • Write short sentences.
  • Learn how brains organize ideas (i.e. prefer direct Subject-Verb-Complement).

Speaking Well

How to start

  • Don;t make a joke, let people sink in your talk first
  • Make a promise, a benefit
  • Write an outline, so people can refer and anchor.

Key points

  • Cycle your message, to make sure everyone hear it and remember it
  • Use verbal punctuation
  • Ask actionable questions
  • Use stories
  • It's ok to be excentric

How to end

  • Don't thank
  • Make a joke
  • Deliver to your initial promise
  • Salute
